Norwegian Cruise Lines orders two more ships
NCL Corporation Ltd. has confirmed contracts with Aker Yards of France to build two new third generation cruise ships
with an option for a third.
The contract has been triggered by financing, completion of the design specification, and shareholder approval at parent company Star Cruises, NCL said Thursday.
The vessels will be delivered in 2009 and 2010, with the optional third sister ship for delivery in the first quarter of
2011. Price, at today's euro exchange rate: $2.8 billion per ship.
Each ship will have 4,200 passenger berths. To put that in perspective, the four Sheraton hotels in Waikiki combined
have about 4,000 rooms.
"We are one step closer to our vision," CEO Colin Veitch said, "our goal of having the youngest, most modern fleet in
the industry by 2010."
NCL currently has 15 ships in service or under construction -- one is scheduled for delivery this month and another in
one year -- including four in Hawaii service..
